Salary in Okinawa is not comparable with that of mainland
Japan. Although salaries are much lower, the cost of living
is
also much lower in Okinawa
,which causes
the ratio of salary to living expenses to work out to
about the same as on the mainland.
There are basically two entry level pay schedules at IAC
which reflect education and experience.
1. ¥ 180,000 / month
2. ¥ 200,000 / month
**level 2 instructors generally have a minimum of a bachelors degree and
a year or more experience in the EFL field.
**There are plenty of opportunities for growth for the right candidate,
including salary increases. Initially, instructors are contracted for
a period of one
year, but contract extensions are possible for those that are both successful
EFL instructors and show good work ethics.
Visa
A proper visa is required to work legally in Japan. Those who have working
holiday, student visa (with work permit), spousal visa, or permanent residency
are welcome to apply.
Sponsorship for a working visa is also available for the right candidate.
Immigration and Naturalization requires that you have your original degree
from an accredited university to qualify for working visa sponsorship.
Driver’s licence
Unlike mainland Japan, Okinawa does not have effective means
of public transportation. Although there are busses and a monorail,
it may not be realistic to assume
that you will be able to get to outside classes on time, all the time.
Busses have a tendency to run on “island time”, and for this reason,
instructors have use of scooters to get themselves to and from classes. It
is therefore required to have either a Japanese driver’s licence or
an international licence. If you have a driver’s licence from your home
country, it is possible to change it over to a Japanese licence. International
driver’s licenses can also be applied for in your home country
over the internet, and it may not be necessary to actually be living
in your home
country at time of application.
